Excuses, Excuses
In a very predictable move, Danilo Di Luca invoked the “Conspiracy” excuse during his initial doping hearing. For good measure he sprinkled in the “I would have to be stupid to do that” excuse. Both excuses have been used unsuccessfully in the recent past by the likes of Floyd Landis, Michael Rasmussen, and Alexandr Vinokourov. None of them were able to convince a doping tribunal of their innocence using those excuses.
The question is, why would the Italian doping authority develop a conspiracy to oust a start Italian cyclist? Wouldn’t they be more likely to target a non-Italian? Also, when is the last time the “I would have been stupid to do that” excuse actually work? It has never worked for men caught cheating on their wives. Likewise, it has never worked in exonerating an accused doper. The reason the excuse doesn’t work is because there is a simple response for it…..”Yes, you would have to be stupid to do that.”
The only remaining excuses for Di Luca are, “I must have been contaminated when I fell off my bike,” and “my drink must have been spiked.” Oh wait…one more: Di Luca has yet to announce that he knows of any famous Italian cyclists that were sexually abused as a child. That is the obvious next step in his defense against these doping charges.
