Team Vino?
In a heavily reported event this week, Alexander Vinokourov returned from a two year ban from cycling. In his return, the big news outlets missed the real story. Sure, it is newsworthy that Vino returned from a doping ban. It is newsworthy that his positive test came during the 2007 Tour de France. It is newsworthy that he claimed his innocence to the doping charge with an excuse that his blood must have been tainted by road grime during a crash. All of these are newsworthy stories, but none are as newsworthy as the “outfit” that Vino wore in his comeback race. In the history of the sport and for hundreds of years to come, there has never been and will never be a team kit as awesome as “Team Vinokourov.” The jersey, shorts, and gloves were imprinted with Vino’s name everywhere it could possibly fit. His name couldn’t fit everywhere, however, because much of the jersey was taken up with a picture of himself from the Tour de France where he was found to be doping. Welcome back Vino. You have been missed.
