Contador Rejects $22.7 Million
French newspaper L’Equipe reported today that Alberto Contador has turned down an offer from Astana that would have paid him the equivalent of $22.7 million over the next four years. Contador’s brother/manager confirmed the offer. Contador has one year left on his contract with Astana, but it is obvious that he has no plans on staying past the end of this season. The deal would have given Contador sole leadership of the team, even with the return of Alexandre Vinokourov. It seems that the stress from riding on Astana this year has caused Contador to decide to find something new. His brother/manager said, “We have nothing against the Kazakhs, but now we have to think about Alberto. Things are too complicated that we can carry on like this. We have to look for a solution with the year’s contract remaining with Alberto.”
