Soler Breaks Wrist in Stage 1

Juan Maricio Soler the defending climbing champion in the Tour de France fell off his bike in stage one and fractured a small bone in his wrist.  He finished stage 1 almost in last place, over 3 minutes off the lead.  Soler had hopes of a high GC finish in this year’s event along with a hard defense of his polka-dot jersey awarded for collecting the most climbing points throughout the Tour.  As it stands now, his tour is in doubt.  On a personal note, I had a similar injury once before a week-long cycling trip, and the pain made it almost impossible to exert any serious energy on the bike.  Road vibrations are quite painful with this type of injury and swelling makes moving the wrist virtually impossible.  It is sad to see such a brilliant rider go down this early in the race.  Stay tuned to TRB.com for details on Soler’s plans to quit or continue in the race.
