Leipheimer and Contador to Astana

Deseret Morning News reported on Friday that they have confirmed that Astana is picking up several Discovery boys.  Included in the list of Disco riders and staff moving to Astana are Levi Leipheimer, Alberto Contador, and Johan Bruyneel.  Dr. Massimo Testa, a coach to Leipheimer, confirmed the move.  He said “They just need to make sure everything is just right before they make it official.”

Rumors have been flying around about Levi and Johan joining Astana, so nobody is blind sided by this news.  The more surprising thing is that Alberto Contador will be following them.  This sets up a super-powered team with no apparent leader for the Tour de France.  It worked for Discovery last year having two team leaders, but with current rider Andreas Kloden already a part of Astana, there will be more talent than the team car knows what to do with.  Johan Bruyneel is a master tactician, and maybe that is why Astana has been so determined to get him in that baby blue polo shirt.

Next question is- What bike will Astana be riding in 2008?  BMC dropped its sponsorship of Astana after all of the doping problems.  Trek needs a team to supply.  Could Trek be marketing a Madone in that ugly color of baby blue next year?

Astana will apparently be riding Trek bikes next year. Heard it out of the mouth of who? Levi. No joke.
