Steegmans Wins?…and A Big Crash

Gert Steegmans, one of Tom Boonen’s leadout men, won stage 2 in the Tour de France today.  It seems that he forgot to stop leading out for Boonen and just kept sprinting to the finish.  Don’t be fooled by any post stage comments by Quickstep.  Steegmans is definitely supposed to help Boonen win and not try to beat him.  Boonen was graceful in front of the cameras, but I am sure he was fuming when he got onto the team bus.  Boonen got enough points today to take over the green sprinter’s jersey, so all was not lost for him.

There was a huge crash with about 2 1/2 km to go, and there were some injuries.  We will have to wait until tomorrow to see if the crash will cause anyone to drop out of the race.  There were no serious contenders that were seriously injured.  Stage 3 tomorrow is another flat stage.  I don’t expect Steegmans to contend tomorrow.
